An Efficient Underground Installation Technique

Directional drilling, also known as directional boring, is a trenchless method for installing underground pipes, conduits, or cables. This is done using a surface-launched drilling rig. At AUS we use the most advanced equipment available today for truly precise directional drilling.

Directional boring is similar, but not the same, as horizontal directional drilling. Both methods offer you advantages over the traditional pipeline or utility installation and are used when trenching or excavating is not a practical option.

This technique can be used with many different pipe materials, including PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene, ductile iron, and steel. Call us today for more information.

Three Phases of Directional Drilling

Directional drilling is generally completed in three principal phases. First, a small diameter hole is drilled along a directional path from one surface point to another point. Next, the bore created during this drilling is enlarged to a diameter to fit the pipeline. Finally, the pipeline is pulled into the enlarged hole.

Suitable for Many Applications

Directional boring and horizontal directional drilling are suitable for many different types of soil conditions and obstacles, such as roads, landscapes, wetlands, and marshes, or river crossings.

However, many other types of soil conditions can become problematic, such as gravel, cobbles, and boulders. Excessive rock strength, poor rock quality, and other similar issues can also affect the ability to complete directional drilling.

Safe, Efficient Underground Installations

Directional boring and horizontal directional drilling can be used to install underground pipes and conduits along a prescribed path from the surface. This technique will leave a minimal impact on the surrounding area of the job. At AUS we use the best, most advanced locating system for our precision drilling work.

Applications of Directional Drilling

Our drilling services are used for a variety of underground utility locating and installation projects, such as:

  • Fiber Optics
  • Gas lines
  • Oil lines
  • Product pipelines
  • Sewer lines
  • Telecommunication and power cable conduits
  • Water lines

It is also a popular and cost-effective solution for the crossing:

  • Congested areas
  • Environmentally sensitive areas
  • Roadways
  • Shore approaches
  • Waterways
